Hi Xochitl, I’m just writing to let you know that I discovered WWS website. I read your musings on competing for writing fellowships which struck a chord. And, I just listened to your reading of Our lady of the water gallons. You inspire me with your honesty, your authenticity… I simply want to congratulate you for taking the time to share your experiences via poetry & personal stories. I can’t wait to read the story you wrote about Curly’s wife while in residence at SJSU with your Steinbeck Fellowship. I applied for the Steinbeck Fellowship this year in hopes of adapting a book I wrote into a screenplay and film. I love Steinbeck’s writing and I have an important story to tell about social justice which was one of his favorite themes. However, I naively thought emerging meant “new or upcoming” as you did, so I probably don’t have a chance in hell. Regardless, I tried and I’m glad to know that you were graced with this important Fellowship. A seasoned international development practitioner and gender expert working in war-torn countries around the world, I appreciate that you are doing important analysis and writing on behalf of the women who cannot, or who have not yet, found their own voices. I wish you tremendous success & joy with your writing, Xochi.
Best wishes, Debra L. Gish
Hi Debra! I’m so sorry for the late response. I just saw this. Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m glad you tried too because you can’t get accepted if you don’t. I look forward to reading your work!
